111 items in all with videos of how to drape a sari, how a tie is cut, weaving a Panama hat, each item has a story and a journey.

This is one show we were looking forward to and it was wonderful!

Dance And Fashion explores the relationship between two great embodied art forms: dance and fashion. Dance has utilized a wide variety of costumes, including contemporary fashions, to identify different characters, but there are also certain iconic styles, which represent a dance more abstractly. Tutus and pointe shoes, for example, are integral to the image and movements of the ballerina, just as leotards and tights are associated with the modern dancer.

As part of the Earth Day celebrations, Astridland participated in the Fashion Fights Poverty 
Runway show Sunday at Pier 94. 

  

For the Autumn/Winter 2014 collection, Astridland captures the vibrant spirit of New York City through contradictions: slouchy hoods and luxurious woolen fabrics capture the urban grittiness of city life while clean lines, soft innovative tops and shiny dresses with dolman sleeves evoke a subtle sophistication.

Astridland is committed to sustainability. Producing all garments in the Garment District in New York City, the company incorporates all leftover fabrics into accessories such as gloves, handbags and hair accessories. Both function and aesthetic inform the embellishments of the collection.

Fashion Fights Poverty's mission is to raise awareness for initiatives that encourage and support creative, effective, and sustainable means of challenging poverty. We believe that the industries of fashion, textiles, and design offer unique and effective opportunities for designers, craftsmen and consumers alike to contribute to the alleviation of poverty through trade, skill-building and community empowerment

INSIDE ASTRIDLAND

I’m sure you’ve heard plenty of people say they missed their calling. Well Astrid Brucker clearly didn’t miss hers. This amazing New York based fashion stylist and designer has styled and stitched her way to the top.

Since Astrid was little, she has always had an eye for color and silhouette. If she wasn’t drawing, which came natural to her, she was busy collecting images in collage-like inspiration books.

Astrid traded in New York University to attend Parsons and obtain her BFA in Fashion Design. She began designing clothes at the school for other people. She started her own line when she needed a dress to wear to her movie premiere for “Joshua” (the 2007 thriller starring Sam Rockwell and Vera Farmiga). Astrid was also interested in styling, and assisted other stylists working on commercials and magazine editorials.

Astrid is the costume designer for numerous films and TV shows, and her work has been featured in various international ad campaigns. She has styled and adorned many influential celebrities including Scarlett Johansson, Lauren Hutton, Eva Mendes, Faye Dunaway, Tim Curry and others, with her brilliant designs.

After making her mark in the industry, Astrid launched her own collection ASTRIDLAND, which includes dresses, accessories and jewelry.

Astrid gets much of her inspiration from NYC, ballet, movies, nature, traveling the world, the ocean waves, and going to see gallery shows.

The beauty of inspiration is that it comes in many forms; you just have to keep your eyes open to discover it. Astrid’s latest work that you see in this article was inspired by Lady Gaga. Of course I can’t leave you without giving you a few words from the stylist about the concept of the shoot.

“More is more – the idea was to go beyond the ordinary and layer clothing and jewelry. For example, I used necklaces to look like bangs and voluminous shapes to create a gaga world.”
